ABSTRACT
The final stage of Theophobos’ life begins with the defeat of the imperial troops in the battle of Anzes in 838. We will deal at some length in Chapter 18.2 with the circumstances leading to this defeat, known mainly through Arabic sources. Here we will merely review the immediate consequences of the battle for the Byzantines, especially the ensuing uprising of the Persians against the emperor. 1
