ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to illustrate through a case study how public intellectuals can play a role in contributing to community development in urban settings, particularly with vulnerable populations. The Canoe Project is an example of how members of a research group, in tandem with members of an Aboriginal-specific collective, collaborated on a project that over a summer brought together men, women, elders, and young people to build a canoe and in the process reclaim a sense of self.
