ABSTRACT

Sun Yefang is, without question, the most outstanding among China’s modern economic statesmen. This is not just because he consistently stood at the forefront of the science of economics, serving as a leader, but also because of his strength of character. He was tenacious and steady throughout a life that had to deal with tremendous turbulence. We must look upon his scholarly and theoretical contributions in the light of the times that he lived through, for only then can we understand both their limitations and their highly progressive nature. In evaluating his approach to scholarship and his academic courage, we must have enduring admiration for the example that he bequeathed to us, not only to economists, but to those in any field of endeavor.
