ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the organization and management of dry bulk shipping companies. It discusses the processes and departments of bulk shipping companies. The chapter highlights the structuring of the enterprises including their organizational structure and departmentalization and discusses issues relating to the human resources on board the ships of dry bulk shipping companies. It analyzes basic principles of the organization of these enterprises to provide a better understanding of structural and contextual factors that affect the structure of organization. Team structuring constitutes a flexible structure as it keeps the hierarchy and the boundaries of the operational departments within limits. Geographical structuring is designed in light of the region in which the enterprise operates and is active, and is based on the logic of the concentration of all the activities associated with a region in one structure. Dry bulk shipping companies operate in a dynamic and changing environment.
