ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we present cognitive and sociocultural approaches as two research traditions that represent the individual and the social sides of collective knowledge construction. We discuss theories from sociology, which build a conceptual background for sociocultural considerations and describe the nature of emergent social processes. We also present a model that brings together cognitive, sociocultural, and sociological considerations. Finally, we describe research methods and discuss potential future developments in both methodology and theory.
