ABSTRACT

This article provides a brief “bird’s eye view” of the field of Learning Analytics. The goal is to capture a unique perspective on work in the area of Learning Analytics grounded in quantitative approaches to the Learning Sciences. Rather than attempt to summarize the whole field, it attempts to illustrate a way of thinking about the technologies being developed in the area of Learning Analytics and some best practices for learning to work within that area. Coming from an author who has taught Applied Machine Learning to hundreds of students, the chapter attempts to point to best practices that have been observed to help students gain skills and overcome misconceptions in this kind of work.
