ABSTRACT
Public health and (the lack of) access to essential medicines are global issues. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) intuitive estimate is that at least one-third of the world’s population has no regular access to medicines.1 The United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Gap Task Force observed that ‘the cost of many essential medicines, especially those for chronic diseases, remains prohibitive in many developing countries’.2
