ABSTRACT

Implications for Performance Management One of the key decisions that must be made when defi ning performance is to establish the measurement time frame. A worker operating a machine producing parts can be evaluated on weekly, daily or even hourly output, while the performance of a manager in charge of building a plant might not be apparent for several years. In some industries, it is diffi cult to meaningfully determine performance in time frames shorter than an annual accounting cycle, even though monthly and quarterly performance fi gures are mandated. For some types of work, such as pure research, performance may not be measurable in a meaningful way for several years.
