Janaki Nair in her important articulation on the emergence of an Indian feminist historiography describes how the women of the All India Women's Conference (AIWC) demanded 'new sastras' in response to Madan Mohan Malaviya's assertion. Nair describes how the historiographical exercise of considering the feminist archive has always been complicated by tensions wrought by class, caste, and religion. The adoption of social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter by middle-class Indian feminists served to create a new archive. While digital feminism rapidly gains momentum in India, there is little attention paid to the future of the prodigious output. The emergence of feminist thought as a defined mode of inquiry was largely made possible by the "historical recovery of the precolonial and colonial past" and "the postcolonial formation of the nation-state" has unsurprisingly dominated postcolonial feminist thought in South Asia.
