ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I perform a critical analysis of the transformative potential of works of contemporary art in the context of the long-standing conflict between Jewish Israelis and Palestinians. 1 My aim is to contribute to discourses of conf lict transformation by showing how the work of Jewish Israeli and Palestinian artists offers forms of alternative resistance to the occupation. My primary focus will be on seeking to understand how the conflict between Jewish Israelis and Palestinians has affected the works of artists within these communities, and how their creations can help to transform the conflict. In order to create the context for this discussion, it will be necessary to evaluate the notion that contemporary art can serve as a means of alternative resistance through its engagement with the discourses of conf lict transformation and strategies of peacebuilding.
