ABSTRACT

In this chapter we recap prevailing themes in this book and seek to move beyond these discussions. After briefly summarising the ways in researchers might employ an embodied approach to conceptualising and researching gym bodies, we develop a more nuanced analysis concerning the clear distinctions that emerged between alternative gym spaces and claims made to ‘authentic’ forms of fitness knowledge. In doing so, we scrutinise the inclusivity and division that exists in contemporary fitness markets, identifying the gym bodies that have not always been included on the ‘gym VIP list’, and in particular how the experiences of women, older and disabled gym users have been largely ignored. Returning to central theme of embodiment, we subsequently reinforce how the carnal experiences of gym goers meaningfully structure individuals’ everyday routines, identities, subjectivities and body–self–culture relationships. After offering these reflections, we outline some of the potential implications our work might have on the fitness industry, education and policy, advocating how a carnal understanding can help gym goers develop deep, meaningful and fulfilling relationships with gyms. Important future avenues for research are suggested before we conclude by acknowledging the unfinishedness of our own bodies by offering vignettes of our up to date gym journeys.
