ABSTRACT

This chapter explores post-revolution developments in Libya and provides futuristic analysis of Libya's political trajectory and future scenarios for Libya's second civil war. It begins with an examination of the pre-revolution period and the international, regional, and local dynamics that helped make the uprising against and the overthrow of the Qadhafi regime in 2011 successful. The chapter explains the post-revolution dynamics and rise of new powerbrokers in Libya, and the role of regional players and the proxy war that ensued in the years following the fall of the Qadhafi regime. It examines the deepening rifts between Libya's political and armed factions, and the start of the second civil war, the UN-led Libyan political dialogue, and the rise of the so-called Islamic State. Furthermore, there is the huge threat posed by the expansion of Islamic State in Libya following the intensified foreign intervention in Syria and Iraq. The chapter concludes with some futuristic analysis of potential scenarios for Libya going forward.
