ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on anti-press violence, legal institutions, the role of historical and cultural context with impunity and research focused on the concept of social change. The literature on anti-press violence is explored as is the critical relationship of anti-press violence with factors such as political development, economic constraints and cultural traditions. The chapter provides a chronology of declarations, resolutions, decisions and other instruments addressing the issue of violence against journalists. It reviews frameworks that may be utilized as a foundation for anti-press violence and social change theorising and research. The chapter examines the narrow strand of literature focused on anti-press violence, the issue of impunity, and legal instruments introduced over time in an attempt to provide limited and broader protections for journalists. It also provides a synopsis of the emerging literature focused on social change research and how it has been, and could be, applied to growing global concerns about violence against journalists.
