ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the current revival of labour reporting in the US and considers labour-related stories that received substantial media coverage. It compares the Fight for 15 campaign in the US to the campaign for rights for workers building a campus for New York University located in the Middle East. Labour rights are an important part of human rights and have been enshrined in multiple conventions. As labour union membership began to fall in the US and the industrial supply chain moved overseas, so too did the number of dedicated labour reporters and the amount of space given to labour-related news. In 2006 Human Rights Watch published a report detailing ongoing labour abuses of migrant workers in the UAE, including Saadiyat Island. Along with Human Rights Watch, the activist group Gulf Labour was one of the earliest groups to bring Western attention to conditions on Saadiyat Island.
