ABSTRACT

Ever since Europeans landed on Turtle Island, they have viewed Indigenous peoples as savages and heathens - less than human. This status was used as a legal justification for the theft of Indigenous lands and brutal acts of genocide committed during the colonisation of Turtle Island. Surprisingly, little has changed for Indigenous peoples despite international and state commitments to democracy, freedom and human rights. Today, the most radical thing that a person can do in Canada is be born Indigenous. Modern governments continue to paint Indigenous peoples as radicals and terrorists for merely trying to survive and protect their lands
