ABSTRACT

Success in theorising and organising penal abolition calls for prefigurative practices. Addressing unacknowledged, unearned privilege can benefit the International Conference on Penal Abolition by being receptive to the notion that colonialism, white supremacy and heteropatriarchy are central planks of criminal justice systems. Abolishing such systems requires an understanding of the effects of such oppressive practices, especially on marginalised groups. This chapter discusses how reconfiguring traditional practices to incorporate anti-oppression and pedagogy of privilege elements into an international abolitionist entity stands to change the way abolition is theorised and organised.
