ABSTRACT

The emergence of inclusive populist parties has transformed the electoral field, especially in Southern Europe. We analyse the distinct types of radical politics that have emerged and the sociopolitical context that has favoured them. We examine the characteristics of new parties, specifically Syriza and Podemos, based on three dimensions (materialist, political and symbolic). We note the development of a tension within these new types of parties. Our conclusions indicate that this tension is inherent in the way in which this type of political formation emerges and it articulates the main internal disputes, from ideological issues to intra-organisational leadership competition.
