ABSTRACT

Siham was also registered in a ‘pre-integration course’ at the Goethe Institute, one and a half years ago. Her teacher was very strict and she was afraid of him. The course programme was beyond her and she felt overwhelmed by the exercises, especially compared to other participants – some of whom were studying at university. One day, the teacher asked her to leave the course and to learn the Roman alphabet somewhere else. She was lucky: she found another teacher from a small private school in Casablanca who had experience in teaching German to illiterate people and who was patient with her. He started to work with her and taught her the alphabet in German. For others who are sent away from the Goethe Institute, it is more complicated to find an alternative opportunity to learn the alphabet. Although there are literacy courses, for example at the Institut français or offers from the Moroccan state, it is difficult to get information about them.
