ABSTRACT

The next section presents the main migratory motives referred to by interviewees to explain the practical and symbolic reasons that led them to settle in Morocco.

4. Migratory motives and the choice of Morocco

4.1. Freedom of movement, the search for a better quality of life and the call for elsewhereness

Before discussing the different motives that led French people to move to Morocco (whether temporarily or not), it is worth emphasising the freedom of movement that they enjoy as opposed to other types of migrants. Indeed, the concept of freedom of movement as used by Gustafon (2006) in his work sheds pertinent light on the specificity of French migratory paths to Morocco. It is worth noticing here that the French are obviously not the only persons who enjoy this freedom of movement: indeed nationals from 64 out of the 193 UN Member States do not need a visa to enter Morocco.
