ABSTRACT
Empirical evidence is widely seen as not just helping us determine what the subject matter of a discipline is like, but as also bearing on what that subject matter is in the first place. To use the familiar terminology, practitioners defer to the world in delimiting the subject matter of their discipline, and on the Kripke/Putnam approach, the site of such deference is the extension of the natural kind terms they deploy.
