ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the film Vancouver Vignette directed by Gordon Sparling. Vancouver Vignette was the last of the series of city symphonies Gordon Sparling created for Associated Screen News between 1934 and 1936. It was film No. 34 in the Canadian Cameos series that Sparling had initiated in 1932. Vancouver Vignette highlights the vivid personality of Canada's third city. Though its write-up made the film sound reminiscent of Sparling's earlier projects, the Montreal Star insisted that Vancouver Vignette was somehow different, that it depicted "in a pseudo-impressionistic treatment, the divers phases of life in the city which is now celebrating its golden anniversary. With a 'voice' new to these films, the picture is both instructive and entertaining, and a credit to the local producers.".
