ABSTRACT

The Outsider Gallery is situated in Clarendon Recovery College in Haringey, London. The gallery and therapy rooms are spread over two floors. Downstairs are three interlinked rooms, two gallery/therapy rooms and the cafe. The cafe is a relaxed environment obviously for people to have teas and coffees so it makes sense to put up a bit of work as well. The idea grew out of collaboration between artist Ben Wakeling and music therapist, Jon Hall. One part of the project is the gallery, which displays work created by people with experiences of mental health problems. Working together with people in psychiatric wards, they developed a model for extending this work into the community. LauraSo it strikes me that normally, or often, family and friends are quite excluded from people's mental health care and journey. A lot of people have enduring mental health issues and music's great but it can only do so much.
