ABSTRACT

'Madlove' brings together people with and without mental health experiences in an attempt to create a temporary structure that will be a reflective and responsive space for exploring and redesigning our perceptions around 'madness'. Since 2014, more than 200 people from diverse backgrounds and with different mental health experiences have contacted the 'Madlove' team with many reasonable and practical, imaginative, creative and extraordinary suggestions on how to create the 'designer asylum'. A blueprint for a 'designer asylum' was presented at the Wellcome Collection in September 2016. The 'designer asylum' should have varied spaces for varied needs: quiet and empty; noisy and chaotic; soft and comfortable; large, light and open; small dark and enclosed. Many imaginative, playful and creative ideas were suggested around the specific spaces in the 'designer asylum'.'Madlove: A Designer Asylum' is all about kindness, humanity and safety for people who seek asylum. Someone summed it up: 'Asylum should be a place to grow and make new steps.
