ABSTRACT

Climate change, which is a key challenge for cities in the Global South, presents particularly strong challenges for urban children in Asia, as many such children are already at a disadvantage. Children and adolescents often comprise about 40 per cent of the population of these cities, and their exposure to increasing and dramatic weather events, outbreaks of disease and fluctuations in temperature are made worse by entrenched poverty, economic recession, youth unemployment and fragile institutions. The impacts will continue to devastate lives and homes – and have the potential to undo many development gains of the last few decades. Understanding these impacts starts to equip communities, governments and stakeholders to prevent long-term development losses.
