ABSTRACT

This chapter defines one's own beliefs about the value and purpose of performing in the classroom; and appreciates how students' performance contributes to their wider musical understanding. It describes different pedagogies and strategies for performing as part of an integrated music curriculum. The chapter considers in promoting performing as a classroom activity, and then goes on to explore different approaches that might best promote musical learning. While some people might regard performing as a clear and quite distinct aspect of being a musician, the chapter takes the view that developing young people's understanding of music in an educational context is about coming to know music in different ways, one of which is in the role of performer. The chapter examines how a young person's performance contributes to their wider musical understanding and understood how to develop different pedagogies and strategies for performing as part of an integrated music curriculum.
