ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores how the arts can be organised in schools; and some of the background history and current trends in arts education. It also explains the argument for the arts being considered a generic family and the consequent implications for educational practice; and discusses the argument for the inherent distinctiveness of the arts and the consequent implications for educational practice. The book focuses on possible 'third way' based on the interconnectedness of all knowledge, and how this might manifest itself in the music classroom. Itencourages one to look beyond music by focusing on the long-standing debate surrounding the relationship between music, the arts and other subjects in the curriculum. The chapter challenges you to draw on learning from previous chapters and your current experience as a music teacher.
