ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the translators’ associations within the United Kingdom (UK). Some associations from related professions and more corporate entities also have a lot to offer individual translators and interpreters. The chapter also focuses on entities that fit the International Federation of Translators definition of a translators’ association, which is: ‘association members are individual professional translators, interpreters or terminologists’. The Institute of Translation and Interpreting is the leading community of practice for professional translators and interpreters in the UK. Most premium-market professional translators will be members of professional peer groups or entities of one type or another, where they participate as members of a professional community of practice and this is a strongly recommended course of action for career development in the sector. The Translators Association is more openly political than the commercial entities, perhaps, as it is founded under the auspices of the Society of Authors, operating, to some extent, almost as a union for the translator members.
