ABSTRACT

Beliefs about corrective feedback (CF) refer to the attitudes, views, opinions, or stances learners and teachers hold about the utility of CF in second language (L2) learning and teaching and how it should be implemented in the classroom. This chapter provides a systematic and comprehensive synthesis of the empirical research on learners' and teachers' beliefs about CF. The synthetic review deviates from a traditional literature review in that it is based on an exhaustive search of the literature and transparent selection criteria, rather than a small set of studies that are selected based on unknown criteria and are therefore subject to biased conclusions and false claims; it integrates meta-analysis and narrative review, using the former approach to aggregate quantitative results and the latter to synthesize themes and patterns that emerge in the literature. There is also evidence that teachers may equate CF with explicit correction and may not consider other CF strategies as CF.
