ABSTRACT

Two major areas of interest in second language (L2) writing are teacher-provided written corrective feedback on language and general peer review, as evidenced by the large number of studies in both areas. Few studies, however, have focused on how well peers can provide language-focused feedback. This chapter focuses on one type of peer feedback namely, feedback on language in L2 writing and provides guidance on the practice of language-focused peer feedback. Peer feedback training is a relatively well-researched area in the L2 writing literature. Studies that have elicited student perceptions about giving and receiving peer feedback on language use in L2 writing also suggest that this activity can be appropriate for L2 writers in certain contexts. Research on the effect of collaborative writing has investigated the impact of peer collaboration on both writing quality and language learning.
