ABSTRACT

Barbara Boyle’s career highlights include producer (Phenomenon, Bottle Rocket), movie executive (The Terminator, Desperately Seeking Susan, Platoon, My Left Foot, Cinema Paradiso, The Crying Game) and Professor and Associate Dean, Entrepreneurship, UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. The focus of this chapter is the independent spirit, beginning with some history including Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, D. W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, Samuel Goldwyn, Orson Welles; Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kramer, Arthur Krim, Robert Benjamin, Roger Corman, Russ Meyer, Sam Arkoff, James Nicholson, John Sales, Joe Dante, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh, Kimberly Peirce, Darren Aronofsky, the Duplass Brothers and influential companies such as United Artists, the Mirisch Company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, Miramax, American International Pictures, New World, New Line, Orion, Sony Pictures. Today, the independent spirit is cultivated by Film Independent in L.A. and IFP (the Independent Feature Project) in New York.
