ABSTRACT

In this chapter I propose that playfulness can be used as both an approach towards and as a method in research with children. Located within a knowledge construction thesis, whereby children and adults make meaning as they playfully interact, it is argued that playfulness provides a context for child-friendly research activity. The arguments are presented within a study of a story-based experience called Narrative Journey, which was developed during research conducted at an independent school in Cornwall. This study is used to critically example my own playwork praxis and the way it informs my research methodologies.
