ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the Narrative Neurotherapy (NNT), and suggests the three movements that spiral forward and loop back rather than a linear progression. The movements are: separating from immediate problem-identity states, substantiating intentional identity states, and inhabiting preferred identity states. Enriched environments facilitate growth of neurophysiological connections and create a stimulus for new learning and identity states. Michael White used these scaffolding conversations to support people moving from problem-saturated stories to expanded retellings better aligned with their emerging preferred identities. Interpretation is a physical act that immediately affects human neurophysiology. NNT scaffolding conversations promote separating from problem-identity states in order to develop alternative identity states. Movements of Narrative Neurotherapy includes: separating from immediate problem-identity states; substantiating intentional identity states; and inhabiting preferred identity states.
