ABSTRACT

This chapter explicates the implications of structuration theory (ST) for understanding the role of agency in the "Four Flows Model". The Four Flows Model covers four key communicative processes that produce and reproduce organizations — as opposed to other social collectivities such as gangs or crowds: membership negotiation, reflexive self-structuring, activity coordination, and institutional positioning. The chapter exemplifies the role of agency in the Four Flows Model through a case study of 2-1-1, an information and referral nonprofit organization. It discusses the implications of theoretical perspective on agency for organizational scholarship and practice. Agency includes the ability to understand social relationships, organizational structures, cultural expectations, and much more. Thus, the concept of knowledgeability also emphasizes an "internalist" view of agency.
