ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the PMRC and placed it in historical perspective in order to better understand the political nature of rock music. Critical pedagogy is a fusion of critical social theory with educational criticism. Educational emancipation requires several essential conditions to be introduced into the discourse about schooling before real empowerment and liberation for all students can become a basic goal of the curriculum. The second component in a discourse highlighting emancipatory pedagogy is the role ideology plays in fostering hegemony by a dominant class. The content and style of music could provide oppositional themes to be used as reinforcement for the larger pedagogical efforts of chipping away at dominant ideologies. Avant-garde music invites the listener into that portal in order to experience the infinite possibilities of imagination in a reenchanted world. Avant-garde music bursts assumptions and denies uncritical acceptance of the rationales constituting the dominant discourses of a class-divided industrial society.
