ABSTRACT

That is somewhat easier said than done, and, as in many areas of business and human rights, identifying where the human rights impact of financial services activity actually occurs requires a far more nuanced analysis. There are some examples which show where the decisions of financial services firms – or the actions of government in promoting their financial services sectors – have directly curtailed individuals’ access to rights. While some of these examples are stark, they are frequently anecdotal and distinctively narrative. This area of research would benefit greatly from quantitative, directly verifiable examples of rights infringement, if only to bring this area of study to the attention of finance and economics academics.
