ABSTRACT

A short-time later, Apple published press statements confirming that it was submitting to voluntary audits of the working conditions in factories to which it outsourced work.70

Although a positive step, it was regrettable that such audits were not conducted at the start of its working relationship with Foxconn. Perhaps it would benefit major companies to include human rights assessments in their due diligence before they agree project financing, or submit for tendering or contracting processes – if only to avoid the embarrassment of having to answer questions on the subject of factory conditions later on.
