ABSTRACT

The seminal Korean American text Dictée uses the theme of translation and an avant-garde, experimental form, deploying shifting perspectives and the multiple voices of its many protagonists to build a layered postcolonial feminist narrative. This narrative technique allows its author, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, to transgress the boundaries of race, temporality, and linguistic differences to construct a uniquely powerful autobiography, a counterhegemonic and transnational feminist text, without relying on either a solid subjectivity or a politics of identification.
