ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a few key pedagogical approaches that enable the primary practitioner to teach creatively in design and technology (D&T) through starting points. Design is frequently built on the ideas of others and looks to discover new ways of solving a real problem or design dilemma. By observing, playing and manipulating, as well as deconstructing objects, children get to explore how they work. The use of objects, books, environments and special events will all be examined for their role in promoting creativity in primary D&T. Picture storybooks can also help to inspire children to develop crucial designing skills. When using environments such as museums and galleries, there is the opportunity for children to encounter contemporary issues that have ethical and moral dimensions. Objects, books, environments or special events can help stimulate curiosity and creativity in children of all ages.
