ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors examine how White fragility has impacted the arc of their careers and how they have leveraged ongoing interracial dialogue to work against White resistance and upset hegemonic norms in education. The undue burden placed on Black teachers and staff in school settings to confront White fragility possibly contributes to our declining presence in the profession in the post Brown v. Board of Education landscape. Black educators face the unfair challenge of dismantling an educational system that oppresses us in order to create better conditions for minority children. The widening demographic divide between a predominantly White teaching force and an increasingly non-White student population presents an exigent imperative for teacher educators to facilitate meaningful dialogue around race and its import in education. The author made a cautious and careful choice in enlisting Heather's help in the design of a graduate certificate in equity and excellence in education.
