ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book traces the history of early language learning education before discussing the global spread of English for young learners in the twenty-first century. It provides a comprehensive overview of research in a number of different contexts. The book provides a critical and in-depth account of the state of language learning teacher education. It suggests that children's motivation for language learning is complex, shifting and dynamic, and these features must be taken into consideration in research on young language learners' motivation. The book explores the main factors that contribute to creating difficult environments for young learners, especially in developing contexts. It focuses on contexts where English is not the dominant language but where it is used as the medium of instruction.
