ABSTRACT

Based on a brief reflection on historical perspectives of teaching grammar in ELT and subsequent influences on the young learners’ classroom, this chapter discusses a number of critical questions that are relevant to developing a roadmap toward the principled teaching of grammar to young learners. As a result of investigation into recent research into the field, a number of practical suggestions are made for activities aimed at getting children, in classes large and small, to notice the relationship between linguistic form and meaning, to engage in noticing tasks and to bring form and lexical practice together in creative ways through language play. The chapter is rounded off with a few suggestions for future research into the field of teaching grammar to young learners.
