ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on mobile learning for young learners who are learning English. As the term denotes, mLearning is a compound of two different but powerful words: mobile and learning. The chapter discusses how ‘mobile’ refers to learning via a wide range of mobile technology, such as tablets, netbooks, laptops and digital readers. All of them share a series of characteristics that help define what is understood by mLearning.

This chapter will show how the concept of mLearning has evolved from its origins during the 60s and 70s with a series of experiments such as head-mounted devices, to the practical use of devices such as the iPad in the ELT classroom these days.

Finally, this chapter will reflect on what the critical issues are, examine current research in the field, and share some recommendations for practice intended to make mLearning work with young language learners.
