ABSTRACT

The main difference between ragtime and jazz is that whereas ragtime was black city music played on the piano, jazz was black city music played by bands. These bands had two sections which were similar to the two hands of piano ragtime. The melody section - usually made up of a cornet (a kind of trumpet), clarinet and trombone - was the ‘right hand’ of the jazz band, while the ‘left hand’, or rhythm section, was made up from instruments such as the drums, piano, banjo, tuba or string bass, and guitar.
