ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the participation in each context, specifically drawing upon the young person’s view of participation in the talent development environment to invoke consideration of interaction between the adult and the young person in this distinct social context. Critical exploration of young people’s engagement in society has sought to interrogate the boundary between child, adulthood and participative research has emerged to reflect a discourse attending to power and agency. In the UK, the nature and focus of sporting provision for children and young people represent the transmission of socially constructed conventions where participation is subject to differentiation according to context of enactment. In a world where life chances are not equal, governments continue to pursue a common responsibility to promote the mental and physical well-being of all children and young people. The modern Olympic movement was founded in France by Pierre de Coubertin. Coubertin was a prominent figure in French society during the half of the nineteenth century.
