ABSTRACT

Initial searches also focused on both the compulsory and interdisciplinary nature of similar developments. These revealed that very few universities or colleges actually had the same module required across all programmes. This chapter provides more specific background to the development of the relevant core module and describe some detail of how the module was developed. One of the logistical difficulties encountered initially was how to run the module when there was no space in the relevant programmes. In early 2015 the new professor of higher education pedagogy became involved and suggested that the academic framework for the module be based on the concept of ‘criticality’, which comprises both critical thinking and critical reflection in order to develop a more ethical and compassionate stance. The idea of social justice and citizenship is also important as a basis for education at our university.
