ABSTRACT

This chapter explores one of Islam’s core values: the provision of social justice in society. It discusses the revolutionary approach that Islam has taken to combining secular and spiritual goals to motivate an individual to give and share one’s wealth, time and energies for the benefit. The chapter presents various tenets that Islam has propagated to procure the provision of social justice in a society. In addition to payment of the mandatory zakat on those with the prescribed means, Islam encourages charity and acts of benevolence. British Muslims have a long history of contributing to social justice; sometimes these initiatives are exclusively Muslim; at other times, different community groups are brought together to work as one in implementing shared values. Through those initiatives, British Muslims have been able to impact on areas of high social need, respond to local priorities, increase volunteering and work in the spirit of localism.
