ABSTRACT

The development of a democratic political society – political parties, electoral rules, interparty alliances, and the legislature — is one of the major challenges for any transition regime. In the first stage of democratic transition, most post-communist countries, including Poland, adopted a more laissez-faire stance towards the regulation of political parties. The chapter looks at the process of party constitutionalisation. It summarizes the most important provisions contained in each of the two Polish party laws under the topic of "The 'Small' and the 1997 constitution". The chapter examines party funding regulations under the topic "Polish laws on political parties: 1990 versus 1997". It also looks at the possible impact all these regulations may have had on the Polish party system. The chapter also examines the relationship between party regulation and party organisational development. It also summarizes the most important findings of analysis.
