ABSTRACT

The chapter explores aspects of business travel in the Middle East in terms of demand and supply, considering key trends and determinants as well as future prospects. There are found to be considerable variations by country with a range in volume and value of business travellers. Political stability is a critical influence underlying demand and distribution alongside economic and socio-cultural factors. Supply is discussed in terms of specialist facilities and services, hospitality, transportation and attractions. Although such amenities are adequate overall, there is room for improvement in several destinations. Opportunities for expansion do exist, but there are significant challenges ahead in realising potential. Business travel is closely linked to wider circumstances and developments within the region and beyond, and a high degree of uncertainty in both arenas is likely to act as a constraint on activity in forthcoming years.
