ABSTRACT

The first edition of Robert A. Dahl’s Modern Political Analysis (hereafter MPA) appeared in 1963 and the last edition in 2003. Ranging from 118 (1st edition) to 172 pages (6th edition) and intended primarily as a short text for undergraduate and postgraduate students, the six editions of MPA address what Dahl, arguably the most renowned political scientist of his era, saw as the essentials of his discipline. The books also reflect the evolution of his thinking about those essentials over four decades.
