ABSTRACT

Students in this medium-sized social work education program reported high rates of civic engagement overall. All students reported involvement in at least one civic engagement activity, with the majority reporting involvement in multiple activities. Most of this involvement occurred in the nonpolitical domain of civic activities. For example, nearly all of the students engaged in some form of volunteerism. Arguably, those volunteer activities with the highest rates of involvement mirror the traditional realm of social services. Students were most likely to have volunteered with organizations associated with health, youth, and educational services as well as in charitable fundraising activities. Voluntarily giving time to such organizations may reflect students’ career interests and the service-mission of the profession. In addition, the reporting of engagement in these activities may be somewhat inflated by students whose involvement included field practicumrelated activities. However, it should be noted that more than half of the students (55%) had not completed a field practicum prior to taking the survey and, therefore, would not have been able to include practicum-related activities in their reporting of civic engagement.
